It has been shown to be an effective solvent for various types of materials and can be used in the removal of odours from food containers. Alpha, alpha, 4-trimethyl-3-cyclohexene-1-methanethiol has been shown to have organoleptic properties when it is added to foods, such as pulegone and α-pinene. This compound is also used in the detection of chloride ions.
