Titanium(III) chloride is a colorless crystalline solid with a chemical formula of TiCl3. It is insoluble in water and is usually used as the dry powder or a solution in hydrochloric acid. Titanium(III) chloride is used for the preparation of titanium tetrachloride, which can be used for the synthesis of titanium metal. Titanium(III) chloride has been shown to react with carbonyl groups to form an elimination reaction, and it can also reduce dicarbonyls to form a preparative reaction. Titanium(III) chloride is flammable and reacts with argon, hexane, and diethyl ether.
