Thallium is a metal that can be found in the environment and has been detected in sewage sludge. Thallium has been shown to have cardiac effects and can cause congestive heart failure. It also interferes with the production of fatty acids, which are important for cellular function and membrane integrity. The detection sensitivity of thallium is dependent on the surface methodology used, and it can be measured by laser ablation or with spectroscopy. Thallium has been shown to reduce photosynthetic activity when present at high concentrations, but does not affect oxygen consumption rates.
