Thiamethoxam is a neonicotinoid insecticide, which belongs to the class of synthetic organic compounds that are chemically related to nicotine. It is used as an agricultural pesticide. Thiamethoxam is highly toxic to insects and has a high degree of resistance to degradation. The LD50 values for rats and mice are higher than 10 mg/kg, suggesting that this chemical has a very low toxicity in mammals. The water solubility of thiamethoxam is very low, making it difficult to degrade in wastewater treatment plants. This product has been shown to have synergistic effects with copper chloride and zirconium oxide in matrix effect studies on soil samples containing soils with high levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).
