Trimethylsulfoxonium iodide is an antimicrobial agent that is used in analytical chemistry. It can be used to acylate amino acids and other compounds, which allows for the identification of gram-positive species. The reaction mechanism involves hydrolysis of the ester linkage by aqueous acid and formation of an ammonium ion. Trimethylsulfoxonium iodide reacts with nitrogens to form an amine and a sulfoxide, which can undergo transfer reactions with other molecules. This compound has been shown to be effective against human pathogens such as Enterococcus faecalis and Staphylococcus aureus.
