Tetrabutylammonium thiocyanate is a strong electrolyte with a high melting point. It is soluble in water, methanol, and ethyl acetate, but not in ether. The titration method can be used to determine the concentration of tetrabutylammonium thiocyanate in solution. The reaction mechanism involves the nucleophilic displacement of chloride by tetrabutylammonium ions. X-ray crystal structures show that tetrabutylammonium ions are bound to two chloride ions at distances of 2.6 and 3.5 Å from the centers of the chloride ions. Tetrabutylammonium thiocyanate is an organometallic compound that reacts with diphenyl ethers to form metathesis products and methanol solvent to form hydrogen bonds. This compound also inhibits compounds such as fluorescence lifetimes and chloride ion
