Triisobutylene is an aliphatic hydrocarbon that is used as a corrosion inhibitor and viscosity control agent. This compound is obtained by the acylation reaction of hydrogen chloride and butanol with fatty acids. The reaction vessel and reaction solution are acidic, which leads to the formation of hydrogen fluoride. The triisobutylene molecule is a mixture of molecules that contain three isobutenes, which makes it a cyclic compound. Triisobutylene has been shown to have good anti-rust properties in acidic environments.
