This reaction can also be described as an addition reaction between thiols and electrophiles such as hydrogen bromide or trifluoromethanesulfonic acid (TFMSA). 1,4-Thioxane has also been shown to react with pyridine and form pyridinium salts which are detectable by NMR spectroscopy.
