1,3,3-Trimethylcyclohexanemethanol (TMM) is a solvent that is used in the recycling of organic solvents. It is also used as a screening agent and a synthetic solvent. TMM is synthesized by the reaction of 1-bromocyclohexane and methyltriphenylphosphonium bromide with sodium hydroxide. The reaction can be catalyzed by heteropolyacids, such as zeolites or sulfonic acids, or by silico-alumina. TMM has been studied for its use as a catalyst for acetoxylation and other substitutions. Experimental studies have shown that TMM can be used to replace acetone in the synthesis of polyesters.
