Tetraethyl methylenediphosphonate is a diagnostic agent that has been used to diagnose infectious diseases, including tuberculosis and malaria. It also has antimicrobial properties. Tetraethyl methylenediphosphonate binds to the active site of mitochondrial respiratory complexes I and II, inhibiting the synthesis of ATP by these complexes. This leads to cell death due to lack of energy. Tetraethyl methylenediphosphonate has minimal toxicity and drug interactions, making it an excellent candidate for cancer therapy.
