It is also used as an analytical reagent for the determination of protein synthesis in biological samples and has been shown to inhibit renal cell carcinogenesis in rats. 2,4,4-Trimethyl-2-pentanol inhibits protein synthesis by binding to amino acids at the ribosomal A site. This binding blocks the initiation reaction and prevents translocation of tRNA from the A site to the P site. The inhibition constant for 2,4,4-Trimethyl-2-pentanol was determined to be 0.012 mM using gel chromatography with acetate extract from human urine and rat kidney homogenates.
