1,1,2-Trimethoxyethane is a solvent that is used to dissolve other substances. It is a colorless liquid with a pleasant smell and low toxicity. The most common use for this substance is as a corrosion inhibitor in the production of polyurethane foam. 1,1,2-Trimethoxyethane reacts with methanol to form methyl ethyl ether and methoxyethanol through cationic polymerization. The reaction mechanism involves an initial oxidation step followed by a borohydride reduction. This reaction product can be used in the synthesis of levulinate and cyclopentene oxide. The magnetic resonance spectrum of 1,1,2-trimethoxyethane has been shown to have functional groups that include chloride, carbonyl, carboxylate ester, hydroxyl group and ether linkages.
