Mellein is a chromatographically pure compound that has antifungal activity. It is a natural product and it was first isolated from the fungus Coriolus versicolor. Mellein has shown to inhibit yeast growth in vitro, with an IC50 of 0.5 μg/mL for Candida albicans and Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Mellein also inhibits the growth of endophytic fungi such as Phoma sp., Cercospora sp., and Alternaria sp. in vitro, showing an IC50 of 1-2 μg/mL. Mellein's chemical structures are 3',4,6-trimethoxy-5'-methylspiro[1-benzofuran-2,4'-cyclohex-2-ene]-1',3-dione and its nmr spectra data show an acetate extract (COOH).
