2,4,6-Trichlorophenol is an organic compound that has the chemical formula C6H3Cl3O2. It is a colorless solid that dissolves in water and reacts with most acids to form trichlorophenolates. 2,4,6-Trichlorophenol is used as a precursor to other products including herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides. The biological treatment of wastewater often relies on the reaction of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol with fatty acids and hydroxyl groups. This process can be accelerated by enzymes such as malonic acid reductase or cytochrome P450s. The resulting product can then be oxidized by redox cycling reactions to produce energy for cellular metabolism. Wastewater treatment plants are often designed to remove 2,4,6-trichlorophenol from the water before it reaches the environment.
