m-Tyramine is a monoamine neurotransmitter that is taken up by nerve cells and binds to receptors on the cell surface. It has been shown to act as a hydrogen fluoride scavenger in vitro. m-Tyramine has also been shown to be an irreversible inhibitor of monoamine oxidase, which prevents the breakdown of dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin. Animal experiments have shown this drug to increase the concentration of dopamine in rat striatal tissue, and it has been shown to inhibit uptake of dopamine in caudate putamen tissue.
