1,4,7-Trimethyl-1,4,7-triazacyclononane is a picolinic acid compound that is used as a catalyst in the synthesis of detergent compositions. This compound is also used to convert picolinic acid into potassium hexafluorophosphate. 1,4,7-Trimethyl-1,4,7-triazacyclononane can be synthesized in a variety of ways. One way involves reaction with trifluoroacetic acid and potassium hexafluorophosphate to form a solid catalyst. The process optimization for this synthesis has been shown by kinetic data and x-ray diffraction data. 1,4,7-Trimethyl-1,4,7-triazacyclononane has also been shown to have catalytic oxidation activity in processes involving hydrochloric acid and nitrogen atoms.
