Tris(dimethylamino)methane is a triphenylphosphonium salt with three nitrogen atoms. It is used as an antimicrobial agent in organic synthesis and as a reactive matrix effect in chromatography. Tris(dimethylamino)methane can form a stable salt with naphthalene to form the formylating reagent, N-methylformanilide. The compound has been shown to have matrix effects on argon and trimethylsilyl and nmr spectra show proton signals at 1.5 ppm and preparative reactions yield dimethylamine chloride.
