Tropolone is a compound that is found in plant species of the genus Myrtus, particularly in M. pomifera and M. rotundifolia. Tropolone has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties and to inhibit the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in vitro. The effect of tropolone on mitochondrial membrane potential was studied in human HL-60 cells and it was found to cause an increase in this parameter.
Molecular modeling studies have revealed the x-ray crystal structures of tropolone and its complex with dioxygen. These structures show that tropolone binds to the heme moiety of cytochrome c oxidase, inhibiting electron transfer reactions in mitochondria. Tropolone also inhibits the synthesis of DNA, RNA, protein, and phospholipids in humans.
