It is an intermediate in the biosynthesis of lysine and can be found in environmental pollution. THP is formed by the reaction of hydrogen chloride with dimethylformamide, which produces hydrochloric acid as a byproduct. 2,5,6-Triamino-4-hydroxypyrimidine also reacts with glyoxal to produce a compound that can cause metabolic disorders.
