p-Toluoyl chloride is a chemical compound that belongs to the class of aromatic hydrocarbons. It is soluble in organic solvents such as benzene and chloroform, but insoluble in water. p-Toluoyl chloride reacts with zirconium oxide to form a zirconium oxychloride complex, which can be used for the production of hydrogen chloride gas. This reaction also produces phosphorus pentachloride and hydrochloric acid as byproducts. The reaction between p-toluoyl chloride and hydrogen chloride gas is more efficient than the Friedel-Crafts acylation reaction because it does not generate toxic naphthalene or diphenyl ether byproducts.
