Thieno[2,3-b]thiophene is a model system that has been studied using magnetic resonance spectroscopy to identify the active methylene. It is an anticancer drug that inhibits the growth of cancer cells. Thieno[2,3-b]thiophene binds to metal carbonyls and forms a stoichiometric complex with sodium carbonate. This complex can act as a nucleophile and attack the electrophilic centers of DNA, RNA, or proteins. Thieno[2,3-b]thiophene is potent in inhibiting the activity of trifluoroacetic acid and x-ray crystal structures have shown that it has low energy requirements for binding to DNA. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy showed that thieno[2,3-b]thiophene interacts with DNA in a time dependent manner and exhibits potent inhibition against cancer cells.
