Thioproperazine dimesylate is a dopamine antagonist that blocks the effects of dopamine in the brain by binding to the dopamine receptors. This drug has been used to treat chronic schizophrenia and Parkinson's disease. Thioproperazine dimesylate has been shown to inhibit locomotor activity in rats, and has been shown to have clinical properties similar to those of chlorpromazine. Thioproperazine dimesylate binds tightly to human serum albumin and is highly soluble in water, making it suitable for intravenous administration. The drug does not cross the blood-brain barrier, but can be administered orally or intramuscularly.
