(1S,2S)-(+)-Trans-1-amino-2-indanol is the enantiomer of (1R,2R)-(-)-trans-1-amino-2-indanol. It is an inhibitor of the viral protein kinase that is responsible for the viral DNA replication cycle. (1S,2S)-(+)-trans-1-amino-2-indanol blocks the activity of a pump that transports ions across cellular membranes. The compound has been shown to be effective against herpes simplex virus type 1 and hepatitis C virus in cell culture studies. The antiviral effect of (1S,2S)-(+)-trans-1-amino-2-indanol may be due to its ability to inhibit the pump that transports ions across cellular membranes. This inhibition leads to an increase in intracellular sodium levels which causes cells to swell and burst.
