Bromeosin is a fluorescent compound with the chemical formula C5H5O2Cl. It is a member of the class of compounds known as hydroxyquinones and has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria. Bromeosin reacts with hydrochloric acid to produce fluorescein, which absorbs ultraviolet light at wavelengths between 360 nm and 450 nm. This property allows bromeosin to act as a stain for proteins in gels, such as those used in electrophoresis. Bromeosin also has an inhibitory effect on benzalkonium chloride-induced contractions in rat ileum and inhibits basic dyes that are used for dyeing fabrics.BR>BR>
Bromeosin has also been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting blood pressure and decreasing levels of serum cholesterol and triglycerides.
