Thallium(III) trifluoroacetate is a trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) derivative of thallium that has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria. TFA is produced by reacting thallium(III) oxide with trifluoromethanesulfonic acid. The compound inhibits bacterial growth by binding to lysine residues in proteins, preventing the formation of disulfide bonds. This prevents the formation of protein complexes and thus cell division. Thallium(III) trifluoroacetate has been shown to be effective against chronic kidney disease and inflammatory diseases. It also appears to inhibit herpes simplex virus-1 replication, which may be due to its ability to bind cyclic peptides on the surface of this virus.
