Thiazole-2-carboxylic acid hydrazide (TCH) is an antibacterial agent that belongs to the group of isonicotinic compounds. It has potent antibacterial activity against staphylococcus and tuberculosis, and inhibits synthesis of DNA and proteins, leading to cell death by inhibiting the production of proteins vital for cell division. TCH also has a tuberculostatic effect, which means it can be used to treat tuberculosis infections. TCH also antagonizes picolinic acid, a bacterial metabolite that is toxic to cells in culture. TCH also blocks protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit and inhibiting translocation. TCH has been shown to have an antibacterial effect on subtilis, but not on bacteria such as salmonella or Escherichia coli. This antibiotic may cause nausea and vomiting if taken orally.
