Triethyl 2-phosphonopropionate is a synthetic octadecanol derivative that is used in the synthesis of carbocyclic nucleosides. It can be converted to trimethyl phosphonoacetate by means of hydrolysis, and this intermediate can be reacted with an alcohol to produce the desired product. The synthesis of triethyl 2-phosphonopropionate has been shown to be a viable route for the production of cancer drugs. Triethyl 2-phosphonopropionate is also used as a reagent in organic synthesis because it reacts readily with alkenes and other unsaturated compounds. This compound is also used in cholesterol synthesis and bile acid metabolism, where it functions as a substrate for reductive elimination reactions.
