3-(Trifluoromethyl)benzenesulfonyl chloride is a chlorine-containing compound that can be used in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals. It is prepared by reacting benzotrifluoride with hydrochloric acid and carbon tetrachloride, in the presence of aluminum chloride, at high temperature and pressure. The reaction product is purified by distillation and recrystallization from water or acetone, yielding 3-(trifluoromethyl)benzenesulfonyl chloride. This compound reacts with sulfur to give a positional isomeric mixture of 3-sulfonylbenzenesulfonic acids. These compounds are also known as sulfonates.
