Tert-butyl O,O-dimethylphosphonoacetate is an organophosphorus compound that can be used in the synthesis of aldehydes. It is synthesized by reductive cleavage of a tertiary alcohol with sodium borohydride. Tert-butyl O,O-dimethylphosphonoacetate has been shown to react with aldehydes in the presence of base to give chiral phosphonates. This process has been used for the synthesis of dendrimers and other biomolecular compounds. The yields are moderate and depend on the reaction conditions and reagents employed.
