Tributyl orthoformate is a unsymmetrical hydroxy-functionalized squarylium homologue. It is a clear, colorless liquid with a boiling point of 117°C and a melting point of -14°C. Tributyl orthoformate has been shown to be effective as a polymerization initiator for the formation of polyvinyl acetate and polyester films. It reacts with trimethylsilane in the presence of an acid catalyst to form squaric acid. Tributyl orthoformate also reacts with hydroxyl groups on aromatic compounds to form ester compounds.
