Trimethylsulfonium hydroxide is a chemical that has been investigated as a potential biomarker for Alzheimer's disease. It is a highly reactive, alkanoic acid which has the chemical formula CH3SO2. Trimethylsulfonium hydroxide is soluble in methanol and formaldehyde solutions. The compound undergoes an intramolecular reaction with trifluoroacetic acid to produce trimethylsulfonium trifluoromethanesulfinate, which can then be detected by gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy. Trimethylsulfonium hydroxide is also used in analytical chemistry as a reagent for the determination of nitrogen content in organic compounds.
