4,5,9,10-Tetrahydropyrene (THP) is an organic solvent that is used in the synthesis of fluorescent probes. It can be purified by sublimation and has a molecular weight of 132.07 g/mol. THP has been shown to react with iodine to form the fluorescent probe 4,5,9,10-tetraiodo-1-(2'-nitrophenyl)-1H-pyrazole (TPI). The fluorescence properties of this compound are sensitive to the presence of nitro groups and hydrogen bonding. THP has also been shown to undergo oxidation reactions in the presence of oxygen nucleophiles such as vinyl alcohol and biphenyl. This process leads to its conversion into an aromatic hydrocarbon with an optical absorption maximum at 295 nm.
