Tetrahydro-3-furanmethanol is a polyol that can be used as an intermediate for the synthesis of medicines. It is synthesized from ethyl bromoacetate and sodium borohydride in an acidic medium. The reduction of tetrahydrofuran to tetrahydro-3-furanmethanol is facilitated by sodium borohydride and oxygenated with ozone. This reaction occurs in an organic solvent, such as benzene or chloroform, at room temperature. Tetrahydro-3-furanmethanol can also be synthesized by reduction of furfural with sodium borohydride in the presence of a catalytic amount of acid or alkali metals such as lithium, potassium, or sodium. Tetrahydrofuran is reduced to tetrahydro-3-furanmethanol via the use of sodium borohydride in aqueous solution at room temperature.
