Triethyl-fluorostannane is a nonpolar solvent that is used in industrial processes. It is a hydrogenated cyclohexane ring with three fluorine atoms. Triethyl-fluorostannane has an unusually high viscosity due to the large number of fluorine atoms, which provide additional steric hindrance. The reaction mechanism for triethyl-fluorostannane is nucleophilic attack on the chloride ion. This reaction leads to a ring-opening polymerization and the formation of poly(tetrafluoroethylene). Triethyl-fluorostannane can also be used as a catalyst or as a modulator in ternary complex reactions.
