It has been used as a propellant for aerosol cans and as a refrigerant for home and commercial air conditioning systems. 1,1,2,2-Tetrafluoroethane is also used in the production of polymers such as polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), which are used to manufacture nonstick cookware. 1,1,2,2-Tetrafluoroethane can be made by heating hydrogen fluoride with hydrochloric acid at high temperatures. This reaction produces hydrogen chloride gas and hydrogen fluoride liquid. The hydrogen fluoride reacts with water vapor to form hydrofluoric acid and heat.
