2,3,5,6-Tetrafluorotoluene is a chlorofluorocarbon. It is a dipolar molecule and has a high electron affinity. This compound can be used as a substitute for the solvent dichloromethane in organic reactions. Tetrafluorotoluene undergoes nucleophilic attack at the carbon-halogen bond, which leads to C-H bond cleavage. The methyl groups present in the molecule increase its reactivity towards electrophiles and nucleophiles. The tetrahydroaluminate anion reacts with this compound to form tetrahydroaluminoxane (THAO). This is an important intermediate in the production of polymers such as polyethylene.
