3,4,6-Trifluorophthalonitrile is an organic solvent that is used as a raw material for the production of other chemicals. It is often used in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals and dyes. 3,4,6-Trifluorophthalonitrile is soluble in water and hydrochloric acid. It can be prepared by decarboxylation of o-xylene with hydrochloric acid at high temperatures or by heating 3-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydrophthalic anhydride with hydrochloric acid. 3,4,6-Trifluorophthalonitrile also has industrial applications such as metal cleaning and degreasing. It can be used to remove traces of metal oxides from glassware and porcelain ware. This product can also be used to remove stains from fabrics using a solution of hydrochloric acid and hydrogen peroxide.
