It is used as a nematicide against parasitic nematodes such as Haemonchus contortus and Trichostrongylus colubriformis. The 6-(trifluoromethyl)imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine binds with sulfonamide to form an n-oxide that inhibits the formation of folic acid in the mitochondria by inhibiting the enzyme dihydropteroate synthase. This n-oxide also inhibits the synthesis of proteins and nucleic acids in bacteria, leading to cell death. Sulfonamides are environmentally safe because they are not toxic for mammals or plants.
