(2R,3R,4S)-6,6,6-Trifluoro-2,3,4,5-tetrahydroxyhexanethial is a competitive inhibitor of the enzyme 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (GDH). It is active against many bacteria and fungi. This compound has been shown to inhibit the growth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in vitro and in vivo. Recombinant proteins that contain this analog have been used as antimicrobial agents to treat bacterial infections. The mechanism by which this analog inhibits GDH is currently unknown. It has been speculated that it may act at the level of substrate binding or catalysis. This compound also exhibits synergistic effects with other antibiotics such as ampicillin and gentamicin.
