VAPOL is an organocatalyst that is used in organic chemistry as a chiral synthetic reagent. It was first synthesized in 1979 by the group of Shirozu and Fukuyama at Tokyo University. VAPOL has been used for the asymmetric synthesis of various drugs, including codeine, and for the synthesis of (R)-(-)-VAPOL hydrogenphosphate which is a precursor to other chiral reagents. This compound can be prepared using a malonic ester as an organocatalyst with thiourea as a base. VAPOL is also used in research to study its properties in the context of chemical reactions.
