Val-Ala-OH is a β-unsaturated ketone that inhibits the protease activity of chymotrypsin and trypsin. Val-Ala-OH has been shown to have a tumorigenic effect on cells in culture and has been found to be transported across the blood brain barrier by active transport. Val-Ala-OH has also been shown to induce apoptotic cell death in various types of cancer cells and inhibit inflammatory responses. The chemical structure of this compound is very similar to the α,β unsaturated ketones that are found in the natural product squalene. Val-Ala-OH is obtained from borohydride reduction of acetophenone.
