3,4-Xylenol is a cytosolic calcium ionophore that has been shown to induce apoptosis in human erythrocytes and hk-2 cells. The cytosolic Ca++ concentration was found to rise rapidly after 3,4-xylenol treatment. This increase was dependent on the concentration of extracellular Ca++. The linear calibration curve for 3,4-xylenol showed a good correlation with the data obtained from kinetic analysis. 3,4-Xylenol is a chemical compound that can be synthesized from xylene and ethanol in the presence of ultraviolet light or by catalytic hydrogenation of acetaldehyde. The product can be purified by gravimetric analysis or by an analytical method such as gas chromatography. 3,4-Xylenol has been shown to react with free hydroxyl groups to form a cyclic adduct that is unstable and undergoes spontaneous decomposition into hydroxylamine
