2,4-Xylenesulfonic acid hydrate is a particle that is soluble in water. It can be prepared by the reaction of 2,4-xylenesulfonylchloride and hydrochloric acid. The molecule is composed of two sulfonic acid groups attached to either side of a benzene ring. It has a constant boiling point and isomeric ratio. The rate of the reaction depends on the molecular electrostatic potential, which varies with the light irradiation and catalyst used. 2,4-Xylenesulfonic acid hydrate has been shown to have photocatalytic activity under visible light illumination and can be synthesized using solid-phase synthesis. This compound exists in an electrically neutral form.
