Xanomeline is a drug that has been shown to improve the cognitive function of geriatric patients. It is a cholinergic drug and acts as an agonist at muscarinic receptors. Xanomeline is selective for the M1 receptor, which is found in the hippocampal formation and has been associated with memory impairment in Alzheimer's disease. It also binds to 5-HT2 receptors and blocks dopamine reuptake inhibition, which may be relevant for Parkinson's disease. This drug does not have any known interactions with other drugs, but it should be used with caution in patients who are taking inhibitor drugs such as monoamine oxidase inhibitors or tricyclic antidepressants.
