Ytterbium (III) trifluoromethanesulfonate can be synthesized by reacting ytterbium oxide with hydrogen fluoride and chloroform in methanol. The resulting product is purified by sublimation under vacuum. Ytterbium (III) trifluoromethanesulfonate is soluble in organic solvents such as benzene, toluene, ethers and acetone.
