1,3-Diiodopropan-2-one is a nucleophilic, ionic liquid that can be used to synthesize benzotriazole. It reacts with aminotriazole in the presence of pyridinium chlorochromate to form a quaternary ammonium salt. The reaction also generates sulfoxide and nitrate as byproducts. This compound can be prepared in high yield by alkylating benzotriazole with 1,3-diiodopropane-2-one in the presence of imidazole followed by cyclization. 1,3-Diiodopropan-2-one is also used for the preparation of compounds containing an annulated five membered ring with a nitro substituent at position 3.
