4-Acetoxybenzyl alcohol is a chemical compound that is structurally related to benzyl alcohol. It has been shown that 4-acetoxybenzyl alcohol binds to the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and inhibits the activity of DNA polymerase, preventing the replication of the virus. This compound has long-term efficacy in animal models and monosubstituted benzylic acetate groups are required for its inhibitory activity. 4-Acetoxybenzyl alcohol also inhibits the growth of bacteria by inhibiting the synthesis of DNA and RNA, which is vital for all cellular functions.
