Diethyl Formaminomalonate is a drug that belongs to the class of alkylating agents. It is an ethyl ester of formamidomalonic acid. Diethyl Formaminomalonate has been shown to have antitumour and antifungal properties, and also has anti-inflammatory effects. This drug binds to DNA by reacting with nitro groups on the guanine base, forming a cross-link between two DNA strands. This prevents the production of DNA and RNA, which are necessary for protein synthesis, leading to cell death. Diethyl Formaminomalonate also inhibits bacterial growth by binding to bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV enzymes required for replication.
