2-(Propanoyloxy)benzoic acid is a synthetic compound with a hydroxy group and a propionyl group. It is used as an insecticide for pest control and has been shown to be effective against chronic prostatitis in rats. 2-(Propanoyloxy)benzoic acid can also act as a solid catalyst for the Friedel-Crafts reaction. The hydroxyl group of this compound can react with other compounds, such as fatty acids, to form natural polymers like DNA and RNA. This drug inhibits the growth of viruses, such as HIV and herpes simplex virus type 1, by blocking the synthesis of viral proteins. 2-(Propanoyloxy)benzoic acid also binds to human erythrocytes and prevents their clumping together due to its quaternary ammonium salt properties.
