3-Amino-3-phenylpropionic acid ethyl ester (APE) is a heterofunctional ruthenium complex that can be immobilized on a solid support like silica gel. This immobilization technique is called immobilized lipase chemistry (ILC). The reaction rate of APE is increased by the ILC method, and the product obtained has an enantiopure nature. APE is also thermostable and can be used at high temperatures. It has been shown to react with amines in organic solvents and in water.
APE has been successfully used for the acetylation of aromatic compounds with low yields and moderate to good enantioselectivity.
